Cake of the week #10 – Unique Wedding Cakes

This week, we’re looking at wedding cakes. ‘Tis the season, after all, and we wanted to showcase some of the unusual cakes we’ve come across that are just plain sweet, not batcrazy weird. They’re all just lovely though!

We have lots of weird and wonderful cakes on this site, but this week we’d just like to take a minute to toast the slightly silly, minorly mad and nominally nutty cakey creations of the world that haven’t gone so mentally over the top that they lose their romantic intentions. Like this one:

The Beatles & their Yellow Submarine

The Beatles & their Yellow Submarine

Yellow Submarine is an acid trip of colour, as you can see, but the message of the film is “All you need is Love” (and perhaps a little Lucy in the Sky…). It’s a sweet and original way to get the music and the vibrant colour you love into your wedding, without being accused of tack, tatty garishness. We assume that the blue meanies represent the in-laws.

Then, take another unusual structure…

Watch for the rocks...

Another meaninful cake that’s also a bit of fun. Pick a place that is meaningful to you as a couple, and odds on you can theme your cake. This lighthouse is that little bit different, but isn’t there something wonderfully romantic about an isolated, retro building guiding lost souls to safety? And it’s HUGE. More cake = better. That is always true.

And speaking of more cake!

I can't be sure it didn't fall over shorty after the photo...

Another explosion of colour, and something a bit different. Lots of shapes can suit cake – cushions, beer barrels, plates, wheels, tyres, records, wheels of cheese, donuts – and you can always have a square cake too! Why not be bold and say no to plain old layers?!

And someone who definitely said no to plain to finish us off…

James Bond's dream wedding cake (apart from his one for the wedding when the bride was gunned down. He probably liked that one too.)

Amazing – just amazing. There is something really, really charming about this cake, despite the hordes of anonymous bad guy henchmen trying to put usunder the union. I like to think that this symbolises the sturdy nature of the relationship; when working together, husband and wife are neither afraid of nor threatened by the worst of disasters and can work their way through anything in the magical symbyosis of marriage. That and it’s really frickin’ funny!
